  • Outrider sessions - 1:1 Career Coaching

    An Outrider is a guard or scout who rode alongside a carriage or caravan. They weren't a passenger; they were active, looking out for obstacles, finding the best path, and protecting the journey

    Every expedition needs an Outrider. Someone to check the blind spots, scout the terrain ahead, and ensure the path is clear so you can focus on the destination

    In our 1:1 sessions, we will act as an outrider to your career. We will work with you to understand where you want to go, and jointly figure out how to get there.

  • Campfire Sessions - Podcasts and Interviews

    We love the imagery of a group of travellers sitting around a campfire, sharing stories.

    We want to bring that energy to career coaching - we will find interesting people and illustrative journeys to bring to life how people succeed in different environments.

  • Caravanserai - In person networking events

    A Caravanserai was a roadside inn along the Silk Road where travellers rested, recovered, and exchanged goods and information

    We love this imagery - we recognise that everyone is on a journey of their own, each with learnings and thoughts that can be helpful to others.

    We want to revive this concept for career development, with live, in person events so that we all come away with new information, connections, and perspectives on how to move forward in our own careers.

Influences on our practice

  • Simon Squibb

    There is a mixture of views on how much your 9-5 should be influenced by you passion. Some argue it can be dangerous to be “too” passionate about your job as it can lead to burnout.

    We believe that view is valuable, but an overcorrection - and that it is still important to stay in touch with your inner sense of mission.

  • Goffee & Jones

    A lot of the leadership books I’ve looked at talk about the “push” activities you do “to” those who are in your team. I prefer to take a more “magnetic” or “pull” perspective - think transformational leadership or servant leadership.

  • Ali Abdaal

    One of the core messages of Dr Abdaal’s work is that productivity should “feel” good. I very much agree with this - emphasising the connection between your 9-5 and your inner world to try and sit within a feeling of joy…or something as close to it as possible.

  • Simon Sinek

    Similar to Simon Squibb’s work - I believe the focus on the “why” helps anchor our activities and draw a line between what we are doing now vs what we are trying to achieve.

  • Kevin Roose

    Technology has a long history of disruption - the AI revolution is no different to other inventions that have come before it. As humanity, we have a choice - we can either decide to resist, or to use technology as a tool to help us grow and evolve.

  • Rutger Bregman

    We believe that we, as humans, each have individual responsibility to utilise our gifts for the broader good of humanity. This view, alone, does not pay the bills however.

    Equally, the trope of the multimillionaire who feels empty inside is equally vacuous and not useful in the discussion of career direction.

    We believe that there are intangible rewards associated with pursuing a moralistic career path - the question is do those rewards deliver earned utility in your life?

  • Hildebrand & Stark

    We believe that one of the hardest things to do in own’s career is to disrupt yourself.

    Similar to the concepts in “The Innovator’s Dilemma” and “What got you here won’t get you there”, many of us rely on learned behaviours that worked for us in the past. We then stop learning because, well, learning is painful.

    This particular book has a good view on the different stage of the lifecycles of high performers, and what we need to focus on during each stage.

  • Stephen Costello

    We loved “Man’s Search for Meaning” and the implications on how we construct meaning in our lives. We find the way Stephen articulates this into a framework quite helpful.

    Fundamentally, no-one can “give” you meaning - it is something you need to construct for yourself.

  • Paul Millard

    Similar to the “Squiggly Career” and “Portfolio Career” movements - no one has mentioned “job for life” in any seriousness in many years now. Cue “hustle culture “ and multiple income streams…

    But this particular book centres on a slightly different message - we used to be advocates of “strategic” career planning. That is, define an outcome, and work toward that.

    The opposite approach - the “tactical” or “opportunist" career planner does something different. Their approach is to centre on their compass in the landscape they are in, and follow their instincts - optimising for “curiosity” rather than 5 year plans.
